Short
form for Material Safety Data Sheets. These contain detailed information
about the health hazards, safe handling and storage, and medical
treatment of hazardous materials
WHMIS
Training Available
As part of WHMIS
legislation, up-to-date MSDS's must be provided by the supplier
of chemical products, such as paints, cleaners, hardeners, that
are used in the shop. All MSDS's must be kept in an area where all
workers have access to them. In Canada, every material that is controlled
by WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) must
have an accompanying MSDS that is specific to each individual product
or material (both the product name and supplier on the MSDS must
match the materials in use).
The Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety in Hamilton,
Ontario, 1-800-668-4284 maintains a database of MSDS's, and information
about understanding an MSDS. See: http://www.ccohs.ca/products/publications/msds.html
More information
on MSDS's can be found on line at http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/legisl/msdss.html

Paint Manufacturers
and Suppliers - the following companies currently provide on-line
access to material safety data sheets(MSDS) and product technical
information.
At
the present time, when a spraypainting facility applies for a Schedule
9 Air Permit from the Ontario Ministry of Environments (MoE)
Environment Assessment and Approvals Branch (EA&AB), the facility
must submit copies of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for
the paint and solvent product that is in use in the facility. In
some cases this amounted to almost 350 pages.
